27 March, 2010. 8:30 PM - 9:30 PM
Castle Plaza will be supporting Earth Hour, Every Hour by 'switching' off all non-essential lighting for one hour from 8.30pm on Saturday 27 March 2010.
What is Earth Hour?
Earth Hour aims to reach millions of people in over 1,000 cities including 100 iconic landmarks, encouraging them to cast their vote for the Earth by turning off their lights. This action will send a message to the world's leaders that strong action needs to be taken to combat climate change.
Make a resolution for the Earth
The theme for 2010 is Earth Hour, Every Hour. It doesn't mean living in the dark for the rest of your life but to do something to care for the planet at work or all year round. Earth Hour 2010 is the perfect time to make a resolution for the environment. It can be just one thing that will reduce your impact on the planet and help us move to a more sustainable world.
Small things to reduce your impact include:
- Invest in power boards with 'off' switches so standby power can be turned off at night
- Install energy efficient lights
- Fix the dripping tap
- Install a dual flush toilet or rainwater tank to save water
- Recycle your electronic gadgets - old mobiles, iPods, TV's, computers and radios contain a lot of material that can be recycled instead of ending up in landfill
- Decrease the thermostat on your hot water system or airconditioning to reduce electricity consumption
Castle Plaza's resolution for the Earth
Castle Plaza is committed to environmentally friendly practices by assisting in water conservation and preserving our natural resources. To date, Castle Plaza has installed a 92,000 litre rainwater harvesting system which reuses rain water for the toilet amenities including toilet flushing and hand basin use. Dual flush cisterns have also been installed in the Castle Plaza Shopping Centre amenities.
Several retailers have also been proactive in reducing water use by installing water-saving devices such as tap aerators and valve flow restrictors.
Castle Plaza Shopping Centre has saved the equivalent of 10 average households water consumption for a year by installing a rain water harvesting system.
